So near yet so far…

That could sum up quite a few things at the moment. The one thing it can’t sum up is Scotland’s performance at the Hong Kong 7s at the weekend! It could, however, describe my experience of the 7s. I was, sadly, unable to get tickets (maybe just as well given Scotland’s performance) but chose to go to the sevens village with big screens and other enterantainment right next to the stadium – so near yet so far! In some ways I think it was worse being so close, being able to hear every cheer and tannoy announcement – and yet not actually being in the stadium to enjoy the real atmosphere… Both South Africa and Zimbabwe got through to the final of their competitions (South Africa in the main cup competition where they lost to New Zealand – undefeated in the IRB 7s series; and Zim in the bowl competition for teams coming 3rd in the pool stage – where they lost to Russia)… so near yet so far.

Getting nearer is my return to the UK – I can’t believe it’s April already… I leave Hong Kong three weeks tomorrow! (And will be connecting at Heathrow Terminal 5...)

As I write, the results of the Zim election are only beginning to trickle out. There’s no clear explanation for the delays – but it looks like Mugabe may be on his way out. Let’s hope it’s not a case of so near yet so far...
